•The key enabling function of DOI is as a widespread, standard, identifier that can be used with ANY existing metadata or identification system to ensure interoperability
•DOIs can be assigned to any entity in e.g. a rights agreement
(content but also, in principle,
party, licence, etc)
•DOI implements the interoperable metadata principles of indecs,
ISO MPEG21, etc
•Having an identifier alone doesn’t help – we want to know “what is this thing that’s identified?”
–we want to know precisely
–precisely enough for automation
–semantic interoperability (not just syntactic)
•There’s lots of metadata already: which should be (re-)
used
•People use different schemes: need to map from one
scheme to another
(e.g. does “owner” in scheme A mean “owner” in scheme B?)
